Power Distribution Unit (PDU)

Typically, a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) allows two generators to be synchronized, and both are brought online to supply power to a common bus. The PDU is sized to handle the load that the two generators can supply. These PDUs allow for power redundancy in critical power applications such as hospitals, radar installations and communications. Two generators share the load, allowing for failure of one generator and no loss of power.

A PDU also allows the user to hot swap a generator for activities such as an oil change. One generator is operational and in need of maintenance (oil change, filter change, ECU service) but the power cannot be interrupted to the Tactical Operation Center (TOC). Position a secondary generator near the primary generator. Connect power cables to the PDU and the signal cable to the two generators. Start the secondary generator and synchronize the two generators. The “in-sync” light will illuminate at this time. Engage the main circuit breaker on the secondary generator. The generators are now sharing the load. Disconnect the circuit breaker on the primary generator and the secondary generator will assume the load. The primary generator may now be disconnected from the PDU and service may be performed. Power has not been interrupted to the TOC.
